Queen in 3D Exhibition by Brian May
When: 3rd May – 13th June
Where: Lomography Gallery Store Soho

Lomography are very excited to announce the new exhibition of stereoscopic photos taken by Brian May whilst touring with Queen. From an early age Brian would travel with a stereo (3-D) camera in hand, so on Queen tours and during recordings he was able to capture rare behind-the-scenes moments of one of the world’s greatest rock bands. Decades later these were shared for the first time in Brian’s photographic autobiography, Queen in 3-D, published by his publishing house, The London Stereoscopic Company. Some of the photographs had not even been fully processed until the book was in the making. Initially thought by Brian to be a quick job, this project turned into a labour of love for May and his team which spanned three years. Each time May thought all the photos had been discovered, more 3-D photos were found in forgotten hiding places, revealing more of the band’s story.

This exhibition shows a selection of these stereoscopic images edited by Lomography and Brian and are exhibited at the Lomography Gallery Store Soho for the first time. The Launch Party will be on May 3rd from 6pm. Please be aware that places for this are limited, if you would like to attend please RVSP to store.london.soho@lomography.comand and we will try and fit you in. There will be complimentary drinks available from Monkey Shoulder and the chance to see the images come to life by viewing them through the magical stereoscope that Brian designed and named an OWL, which will be available to use at the gallery.

Note: Brian May will not be attending this event.

Brian May Reflects on Passion for 3-D photos + Transcript (ABC NEWS)

February 27, 2018

ABC.NET.AU
Brian May reflects on his career and his passion for 3D photos
24 February 2018

. This week in Sydney the 70 year old was the center of attention of adoring fans.

STUDIO: Almost 50 years ago Brian May was a young guitarist who formed a band with three mates in London. Queen then conquered the music world with their original blend of hard rock and theatre, all powered by most distinctive guitar sound.

(Lady presenter) Although he’s turned 70, May continues touring and indulging in his many passions, including photography. Candice Prosser had a rare opportunity to speak to the rock and roll legend.

BRIAN MAY: I do love what we do, yeah. It’s sometimes what goes with it is hard and all the traveling, especially when you get a little older. You’re away from your family, away from home. away from you animals. It’s tough, you know, but for that couple of hours on stage it’s worth it.

CANDICE: Queen, the chart-topping legendary rock superstars who took the world by storm with their hit songs, Though their charismatic frontman Freddie Mercury is no longer of this world, Queen’s star keeps shining guitarist. Guitarist Brian May is touring Australia with original drummer, Roger Taylor, and new recruit, Adam Lambert. This week in Sydney the 70 year old was the centre of attention of adoring fans

FANS: [Of Brian] He’s an awesome boy. He seems to be very genuine in what he does he has a passion for what he does and I think it shows in a lot of his work.

CANDICE: Although he’s used to being photographed, Brian May enjoys being on the other side of the lens. His latest book is a collection of intimate 3-D photographs he took of Queen in the band’s heyday.

BRIAN: Well this is a good one. You know, this is Freddie taking a picture of me, taking a picture of him, so I rather like this and I would love to find the picture that he took on his instant stereo camera. It is like a photo album very much so and people are shocked I find, you know, but when they actually get in there and look through the viewer they go “Oh my God. Didn’t realize that it was going to be so real and we feel like we could touch you guys – we could touch Freddie in those days.” It’s a kind of magical experience I love that. It’s magic, you know. it’s a kind of magic which I always wanted to bring to Queen… and this is where people go “Wow – I feel like I could touch him”, you know, so have a look…

CANDICE: Wow.

BRIAN: So you see I got a “Wow” from Candice, so we’re all right.

FAN: Amazing band. Been around the world watching them. I’m actually seeing seven shows in Australia so tonight’ll be night two and then I’ve got Brisbane, Adelaide and Melbourne as well.

CANDICE: It’s been decades since Queen rose to fame, with that unmistakeable Queen sound. The music that has been loved by millions remains as iconic as ever and continues to be enjoyed by old and new generations of fans alike.

BRIAN: We’re normal people, you know. Like we’re rock stars but we’re not saying, “Hey we’re rock stars and this is what it feels like”. We’re saying we’re normal people. We have normal kind of dreams. We have normal disappointments and sadnesses and joys, love etcetera. That’s what we talk about in the songs. I think that’s what it is, and we were fiercely competitive as writers, you know. (Gestures) I’m doing this… who does this remind you. You know we live in strange times but the fact that I think we still talk about normal things, the things that everybody feels inside, that’s kind of what it’s about.

CANDICE: Cancice Prosser, ABC News.

<‘We Are The Champions’ playout>

STUDIO: Doesn’t he seem remarkably normal for a rock star. (Lady Presenter): Yeah I’m gonna have that song of my mind all day now. ‘We Are the Champion’s very appropriate. (Male presenter) it is appropriate because we go to sport now…

Queen’s Brian May swaps strings for snaps

Brian May has taken a break from Queen’s Australian tour to promote his 3D photo book of the band. The long, black curls may be silver now but Queen guitarist Brian May still looked every inch the rock star while meeting fans in Sydney. The rocker was visiting CBD bookstore Kinokuniya in his capacity as a photographer, promoting his book of 3D pictures of his band through the decades.

“This is the Victorian way of viewing 3D and it’s still the best, to be honest,” May told AAP on Thursday.

Queen in 3D features never-before-seen pictures of the band taken by May from the 1970s to today using a 3D camera. It also includes some writing from the guitarist, reminiscing on the events surrounding the photos.

“In the end there was a whole story to be told around these pictures which is what you find in the book,” said May, who performed to about 20,000 people in Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena the night before.

Queen, whose frontman Freddie Mercury died in 1991, have been performing with American singer Adam Lambert since 2011.

“We’ve kind of grown together as a team like a family really … he really does give the band new life and he doesn’t have to be Freddie in any way whatsoever. He just is what he is and it works,” he said.

Mercury is still a huge part of the band’s identity, featuring on the cover and also on May’s T-shirt.

“We always have Freddie with us and the fact that we have Adam there doesn’t take away from that at all,” he said.

A feature film on the band’s life, Bohemian Rhapsody, has been in the works for nearly a decade. Directors Stephen Frears and Dexter Fletcher were reportedly signed on to the project at different times. Then, last December, director Bryan Singer was fired and Fletcher was back on board. Sacha Baron Cohen was originally hired to play Mercury but quit and Rami Malek took on the role.

“Sometimes you have a bumpy journey but it comes to a great conclusion. I think people will love (the film) from what I’ve seen,” May said.

* Queen in 3D” is available now and the band is performing in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and finally Perth on March 6.

INTERVIEW AT KINOKUNIYA BOOKSTORE – https://youtu.be/S4AA0tuIf8A

TRANSCRIPT (by Jen Tunney)

MSN: Are you enjoying being back in Australia?

BRIAN MAY: Yes, of course. Yeah I mean I didn’t really know if we’d ever get back here, you know, so it’s amazing to be back here, yeah. It really is, yeah.

MSN: It’s fantastic to have you back here when there’s still so much going on.

BRIAN: A lot going on, yeah. I mean Adam is a lot going on in himself, you know. We’ve kind of grown together as a team, you know – like a family really – and I mean Adams half my age. You wouldn’t kind of feel it though you know. We have the same kind of ethic, work ethic, and he’s great to work with and it really does give the band a new life. And he doesn’t have to be Freddie in any way whatsoever. He just is what he is and it works.

MSN: I see that you do have Freddie with you today on your t-shirt.

BRIAN: Yeah – well we always have Freddie with us, you know, and the fact that Adam’s there doesn’t take away from that at all, you know. Adam actually gives a lovely little bit homage to Freddie during the show and he’s very open. He’s like: “Yeah. I’m not Freddie you know – no shit – but, you know, I am what I am a we are what we are now and this is a moment in time and I feel very very fortunate to have it.”

This is free hologram and it’s the Victorian way of viewing 3-D and it’s still the best to be honest, so this is my own little viewer called the OWL. Yeah – invented by myself and made in Sunbury upon Thames and now in China as well. It’s an OWL and this is what you get with the book and this is how you view the 3-D content of the book and of course it’s the Victorian way. It’s very intimate, You’re just one-to-one with the pictures and in my opinion still the best way to enjoy 3-D. And I carried the 3d camera with me all those years in Queen, which is unusual, so all these pictures are real and when you look at them and you look at Freddie, you look at us in those days – you knoW the 70s the 80s the 90s – it’s like you’re there with us. So it’s a unique book.

MSN: And on top of all of this we know we’re all eagerly waiting for the film that you’re also working on.

BRIAN: We have a film, yeah. It’s been shot. It’s wrapped. The bits that I’ve seen are amazing very touching – very moving story I think. It was a long journey to make this film and a very bumpy journe. Sometimes things are like that you know. Sometimes you have a bumpy journey but it comes towards a great conclusion.
